This Almost Never Happens (Jenny Version)

It was dark outside when she came into their room.

“Come on, babies. Wake up.”

Christian popped his head down from the top bunk, wide-awake.

“What is it?”

“A lunar eclipse,” she whispered.

Charlie hadn’t moved. She knelt down beside the bed.

“Come on, bud. You don’t want to miss this.”

He groaned a little and rolled over to face the wall.

Christian was already at the door.

“Let’s go, mom.”

She sighed and pulled the covers up around Charlie’s shoulders, then stood up.

Forty years later, he still remembered the sound of their voices fading into the pre-dawn darkness.
