The Sky Was Pink (Jeremy Version)

I think this—this is what my daughter sees.

She is very imaginative, the shrink says, his round glasses perched on the tip of his nose. But what does it mean, I ask, why would a five-year-old draw something like this?

Any number of reasons, says the doc, scratching his wiry beard, have you considered that maybe she is just creative?

I hold the portrait up to the light and notice things that I hadn’t before. The layers of detail all stand out— the texture of the blood river, the stink lines radiating from the animal carcasses, the waning moon.
