The Finnish Affair

“You look lost,” she said.

He broke eye contact with his glass to glance at her. The way she pronounced “look” as two subtle syllables echoed in his mind. She turned to look out the picture window at the Baltic. She brushed a pale curl from her pale temple with two pale and graceful fingertips, but it fell back in place.

He returned his attention to the vodka, sipping. It burned gently down his throat, much the same way hot velvet might.

“I am,” he said, more to the glass than to her, “But I’ll find my own way home.”
