The Fight For Mathematics

When she was younger, Jamie actually enjoyed doing her algebra homework. And there was never a time that she went outside and didn’t get all dirty.

“But it’s beautiful!” her mother said, swinging the door open wide and twirling in the opening, arching her feet up, becoming taller.

“Can’t I do what I want?” Jamie asked, not looking up from the coffee table, jotting down the combination of letters and numbers quicker than she had to.

Twenty years later, Jamie thinks about that, asking her daughter to go for walks and sighing deeply every time the little girl says no.
