The Cynical Four-Year-Old

“I’ve seen things, man.  I’ve seen things no one my age should see.  I’ve been covered in sweat, tears, urine, and blood from my own mother’s womb.  I’ve slept in my own shit and vomited on my mother’s breast.  So, you don’t tell me I look tired or cranky.  You don’t tell me it’s way past eight o’clock.  I’ll put my own damn self to bed.”

Eric slammed down his dinosaur figurine and marched out of the den.  His father shut off the television and waited.

Eric peaked through the doorway.

“Want me to tuck you in, pal?”

Eric nodded.
