THE CAT & THE SHADOW

As I walked home from some bar, a cat crossed the street to meet me. It wore a collar, and mewed with a friendly squeak. I paused to pet her, crouching on the balls of my feet. She brushed against my shin, and I scratched her throat.

“Get home,” I said, and thought I had better do the same. Each streetlight cast my shadow tall on the sidewalk. It shrank again with each step, and then flowed behind me like a dark cape.

In the distance, two people walked like zombies. I couldn’t tell if they were coming or going.
