She worked so hard just to get there. She understudied both female leads, which meant she had to learn three parts including her own in the chorus. When Veronica ate that bad shellfish and ended up in the hospital, she stepped in, seamlessly, effortlessly. It was a thing to behold. The audience, you know, they always mutter and whisper when a substitution is announced; they feel like they’re being ripped off. But she won them over, man, and how. And then right after the big number with the kiss, to have that set piece fall over right on her head…
