A girl and her father are sitting on a bench staring into a lake. They are stuck this way forever. From here on out, they must focus unblinking on the way the lake does not ripple, no stone may enter it, no fish may leave. Across the lake, a squirrel clings to a tree, his heart exploding, a white dog snapping at his tail. The moon calls the night on, clouds turn to wind and the man and girl are looking up, the sky split in two, half of it black, half blue; there is no color where they merge.
