Marshall Took a Hit

30 seconds into the fifth round, the challenger’s glove smashed into his face. It was time. But after spending most of his life struggling to stay upright, his body wasn’t ready to go down. He commanded his knees to weaken. They refused. So he thought about what his doctor said last week. “Cortisone can mask it. But not for very long.” Then he thought about what the men had said, thought about retirement on the beach and what a million dollars could buy. He blinked the tears from his eyes, swayed backward and waited for the mat to catch him.
