Keep the Change

“That’ll be seven-eighty-nine,” said the counter girl.

“I don’t have exact,” I said. “Got two tens for a five?”

She blinked, then blinked again. “Can I give it to you in ones?”

I remember looking at her hopeful face and thinking, damn, I’m scamming the Virgin Mary.

I watched her fumble at her cash drawer and thumb out the bills without looking at anything.

Oh, Jeez, I thought. Blind. She’s blind.

Some cons wouldn’t get this, but I’ve got feelings. For thirty seconds I was in love. “Tell you what, beautiful. Just take this ten. Keep the change.”

I liked this one a lot, has an emotional arc. it’s a complete story rather than a snapshot.

Yeah, I was gonna say something similar. A redemption tale in 100 words. Great work, Bill.
