Crab Blood

(Crab’s blood is actually white).

Rick watches his niece eat her crab. She asks, “Where’s the blood?” Rick tries to explain, but wanders into bad analogies for ten-year olds. He’s not fond of children.

“Like… pig’s wings, frog’s breath?”

She nods, “I don’t know what you mean.”

“Like third eyes?”

She points at the zit on his forehead –rather innocently.

Rick sighs impatiently. “Lyn – not everything is real… Like, the tooth fairy.”

She laughs, defending her life-savings.

“No really.”

“Santa Claus isn’t real either.”

Inspecting her crab, she says, “You’re full.”

“Of what?”

“Crab blood.” Then, she smiles. Rather innocently.
